How to improve speed to market for new products by up to 30%?

Speed up your supply chain operations by providing manufacturers with accurate 3D models of your product prototypes. 3D Product models are created from technical drawings, sketches, or reference photos and can help reduce tooling costs, facilitate switching  materials, textures, and colours, eliminate the need to ship physical samples and reduce overseas travel.

What is 3D product modeling?
Expertise
Expertise

3D product modeling is the process of producing a complete and accurate 3D representation of a product, or product concept that is still in the development phase via special software applications such as CLO (for fabrics and other soft items). This can help produce critical design concepts that are required to make informed design decisions that meet your business needs on the roadmap towards the digital transformation of product design and manufacturing. Even complex objects with uneven surfaces, such as clothes can be created from simple design concepts and turned into highly detailed 3D models.

How does 3D modeling work?

There are different ways to build 3D product models and in this section, we focus on cases where a physical prototype does not yet exist. We typically ask our partners for 2D concept drawings or 2D CAD patterns which we then turn into 3D models.

Important considerations when building the 3D product model are: polygon count, requirements for hard and soft items, collaboration with product design team.

Is a high or a low polygon count required?

3D models consist of polygons, small pieces, that, much like a jigsaw puzzle, connect and form the 3D product model. Generally, the more polygons there are the more detailed the model and the larger the file size. A larger file however may render very slowly and make it difficult to work with the model. Thus, for smooth real-time viewing and convenient model adjustments, a polygon density that is too high may be a disadvantage. For some industries, such as the jewellery industry, it is however important to have a high polygon density so that diamonds and other gems can be cut with the required precision. Besides the polygon density, it is also important to minimise distortion so that designs and textures can be applied accurately on the final product.

Specific requirements for hard and soft items?

For soft items, such as clothing or footwear, a more detailed surface rendering is required to accurately display the product design, patterns and styles applied. Also pockets, embroideries, trims, etc. need to be factored into the design. For hard items, it is important to consider the material choice – how do the properties of the final item change given the materials selected in production? What is the weight, look and feel, and cost impact? One advantage of Impala Services is that we closely work with many factories in the Greater China region – we have substantial experiences working with hundreds of suppliers and understand which materials may be a good fit for your specific project.

For us close collaboration is key. We follow stringent operating procedures to minimise back-and-forths to save our clients time and money. In addition to that, we are also able to work closely with our clients’ Chinese manufacturing base – we speak their language and are in the same time zone. This puts us in a unique position to ensure that products our clients envision can actually be delivered on time, on budget, and as per the required product specifications.
